Bishop Festo Memorial Report 2006

The Background

Bishop Festo Kivengere is the founder of African Evangelistic Enterprise in East Africa. He went to be with the Lord in 1988. Memorial lectures have been held in Kampala for a long time until four years ago when it was decided that the venue for the memorial would be moved on a cyclic basis in all the dioceses where Festo’s ministry was felt. In 2004 the memorial was held in Kigezi diocese and in 2005 it was held in Rukungiri. This year it was Kampala Diocese’s turn to host the memorial and so the Leadership of the diocese was approached. All Saints Cathedral was chosen as the diocesan coordination point of the activities in regard to the memorial.

Planning of the Event

The planning committee constituted of members from All Saints Cathedral and AEE management. This constituted of Rev. Esakhan Okwii, Dr. Sarah Ndyanabangi, Ms. Grace Nalukwago Kafeero, Mr. Steven Lumonya and Mr. Paul Wasswa Ssembiro.

It was agreed that the memorial this year would focus on raising awareness for the ministry of AEE among the younger generation, increasing the local support base, and launching the book: "The East African Revival through 70 years". The board agreed that there be one event on Sunday the 21st of May 2006 at All Saints Cathedral instead of two as had been the cse for the two held in Kigezi and Rukungiri respectively.

The mobilization of those who would attend the event was done through radio announcements, newspaper adverts and articles, using mobile phone text messages (sms) and by announcements in church services. Cards were printed and sold at 15,000/= each at several outlets including; All Saints Cathedral, St. Francis Chapel, Bugoloobi Church of the Resurrection, St John’s Kanmwokya and by members of AEE staff in the respective churches they attend and spheres of influence. The event had an estimated attendance of 300 people with the majority being in the church service.

St Francis praise Group led in the music at the service. The kivengere family gave a moving account of "The dad they knew". Peace Kivengere Lwanga excellently carried the congregation along with humour as she shared stories of them growing up in Dodoma, entertaining countless visitors in their home who would come any time, being given bicycle ride treats by their dad and lots of singing. The family sung a Kiswahili song – “Ni Ujumbe Wa Bwana” and launched their choir –“The Melodious Four”- composed of the daughters.

The prime ministers presented a paper on “The East African revival and the ministry of Festo Kivengere” citing how his father – the late Simeoni Nsibambi had participated in laying the foundation for the East African revival. He gave a detailed account of how the revival was initially resisted by church leaders and possible reasons for which this might have happened. The dinner was attended by about 200 guests. The national coordinator made a PowerPoint presentation on AEE, core values, past successes, ongoing projects and how the guests that were present may partner with the ministry

Conclusion

In all the memorial was a big success much as the it was commemorated on the eve of secondary schools beginning of term, which comes with lots of traffic jam. The organizing committee would like to express gratitude to;
  • Staff for all the efforts made to make the day a success
  • All saints Cathedral for availing their facilities in hosting the event
  • The Right Hon. Prime Minister for accepting our invitation as Guest of Honour
  • All our guests who attended the event
  • All the service providers for their timeliness and excellent delivery
